Beer and Bacon conversations: a new session at the Leman swine conference!

The organizing committee of the Allen D. Leman swine conference is proud to present a new session: Beer and Bacon conversations! The goal of this unique session is to invite industry leaders to share personal views and experiences with participants in a fun and relaxed environment.

This year, we are honored that Dr. Matthew Turner, veterinarian and head of pork live operations at JBS, accepted our invitation.

A graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Turner joined JBS after being a staff swine veterinarian for Prestage Farms for more than 10 years. He was recognized by the American Association of Swine Veterinarian as the 2014 Swine Practitioner of the year and presented the Dr. Alex Hogg Memorial Lecture at the 2017 AASV annual meeting. Dr. Turner is currently an at large member of the Board of Directors of the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC).

The session will be held at the InterContinental hotel on Sunday, September 16th at 5:15pm. Dr. Marie Culhane will get the conversation started but participation from the audience is more than welcome!

Dr. Rebecca Robbins to Receive 2018 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award

Rebecca Robbins (1) (1)(1) The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine has named Rebecca Robbins, DVM, PhD, as the 2018 recipient of the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice award. Robbins is the senior production veterinarian for Seaboard Foods, one of the nation’s leading pork producers and processors.

The Science in Practice award is given each year at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference in St. Paul, Minn. It is the industry’s premier award for swine practitioners who have shown an exceptional ability to use science in day-to-day practice. Nominations and selection of the winner are determined by a swine faculty planning committee at the University.

The 2018 award recognizes Robbins’ service on Seaboard Foods’ research and development team, which coordinates an average of 45 studies annually. She also participates in university research projects and has served on numerous industry advisory boards. Robbins’ research interests are in the use of antibiotics in pork production, epidemiology, and management of mycoplasmas, PRRSv, and PEDv in integrated systems.

“For more than 20 years this award has honored some of the most accomplished veterinary leaders in the swine industry,” says Montse Torremorell, DVM, PhD, and professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the University. “We are excited to honor Dr. Robbins and to have the support of Boehringer Ingelheim for this award.”

The Allen D. Leman Swine Conference will be held September 15-18, 2018 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre. From its beginning in 1974, the conference has presented information and issues pertinent to the swine industry. The conference has transformed from a meeting in a small lecture hall to the annual, international conference with more than 800 participants that we know it as today.

Best of Leman 2017 series #5: J. Pittman – We’ve posted a lot of sows.

We launched a new series on the blog in October. Once a month, we are sharing with you a presentation given at the 2017 Allen D. Leman swine conference, on topics that the swine group found interesting, innovative or that lead to great discussions.

The fifth presentation we are sharing is from Dr. Jeremy Pittman from Smithfield’s, NC. In the context of increased sow mortality, Dr. Pittman spent a lot of time investigating the root causes of this change and he shares his experience in this talk.

NHF: Here’s how co-opetition fits in thriving pork industry

Our latest collaboration with the National Hog Farmer develops the concept of co-opetition and how it fits in the pork industry. Dr John Deen, professor at the University of Minnesota explains what co-opetition with the following:

“With co-opetition, the argument is that the best businessperson is one that does not only excel at production but also works cooperatively with competitors to address common opportunities.”

The article develops two examples for which co-opetion can be useful, one of them being infectious diseases. The Morrison’s Swine Health Monitoring Project is a clear example of a successful initiative in this regard, with competing production systems voluntarily sharing information on their farms’ health status.

More importantly, co-opetition is happening in a variety of productions. Dr. Rebecca Liu from Lancaster University compared cooperation and competition with co-opetition, and how it helped other industries to thrive during her keynote presentation the 2017 Allen D.
