Albert Canturri and Gustavo López selected as MnDRIVE scholars

We are proud to announce that two great candidates, Albert Canturri and Gustavo López, have been selected as 2020-21 MnDRIVE scholars.

The MnDRIVE Global Food Ventures (GFV) seeks to promote a broader and deeper understanding of our interconnected food systems through experiential cohort learning. Graduates with a broader understanding of food production, processing, protection, and policies will be better able to apply their disciplinary expertise to advance MN food economies and improve the lives of Minnesotans.

Eliana Silva Paladino and Jose Angulo to receive Pijoan and Leman swine fellowships.

The recipients of the Pijoan and Leman fellowships were revealed last week and we are proud to announce that two great candidates were selected.

paladino_eliana Dr. Eliana Silva Paladino is receiving the Carlos Pijoan fellowship. Eliana obtained her DVM and MS degrees in Brazil and is currently a PhD student advised by Dr. Julio Alvarez. Eliana’s PhD is focusing on the application of quantitative tools for the management of problems of relevance to the swine industry at both the farm and population (i.e., supra-farm) levels. She is currently focusing on developing systems to quantify the effect of endemic diseases such as swine influenza and the management strategies adopted for their control in affected farms. She is also working on the assessment of trends in submissions received at veterinary diagnostic laboratories over time to evaluate the impact of changes in disease distribution, diagnostic approaches and farm management in the U.S.

jose_angulo Dr. Jose Angulo is receiving the Allen Leman fellowship. Jose obtained his DVM degree in Mexico and is currently a PRRS specialist and managing veterinarian for Zoetis in charge of U.S. customers. Jose will be completing his Masters in Dr. Montse Torremorell’s lab and his work will focus on understanding PRRS infections in growing pigs and how to prevent them.

Webinar on Senecavirus A from Dr. Sturos tomorrow 03/28 at 4pm

Dr. Matt Sturos, diagnostic pathologist at the University of Minnesota, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will be presenting the latest information on Senecavirus A in swine, tomorrow at 4pm in a learning session organized by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA). Participants can join in person at the MVMA conference room or online via WebEX.

Pregnancy diagnostic wet lab for veterinary students

This past week-end, a dozen of veterinary students chose to meet with Drs. Maria Pieters and Perle Boyer at the University of Minnesota Southern research and outreach center in Waseca, MN to practice their pregnancy diagnostic skills over enjoying the unusually warm weather.

For over 3 hours, the first to third-year veterinary students each got the chance to perform an ultrasound examination on sows at various stages of gestation as well as on a sow that was not pregnant to appreciate the difference. Various tools were presented to them to compare and to get familiar with.

By the end of the lab, we are glad to say that all students were able to successfully tell if a sow was pregnant or not!
