Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus impacts as much as half of all swine breeding farms in the United States. It’s one of the most costly issues the swine industry faces. The virus now costs the U.S. pork industry $1.2 billion per year in lost production, an 80-percent increase in the last decade.

St. Paul, Minn.—Savannah Thomson, a second-year student at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received the 2024 Morrison Swine Innovator Prize, an award given to veterinary students who want to make a difference in swine health and production.

Among those caring for animals and supporting more than 100 veterinary students and dozens of volunteer veterinarians on hand to help is Dr. Maria Pieters, an associate professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine. For her dedicated involvement with the exhibit and her passion for its mission, Pieters received the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association’s 2024 Distinguished Service Award.
