Recent Graduates: You’re Invited to Attend the Breakfast Conversation with Dr. Bob Thompson at the Leman Conference

Have you graduated within the last 4 years?

If so, you are invited to attend the Breakfast Conversation with Dr. Bob Thompson during the 2017 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference at 6:30am on Monday, September 18 – at no extra cost.

This event is a great opportunity for new graduates to hear from experienced veterinarians and learn from the best. It is an informal setting where our guests share their life-long experiences, professional tips, and reflections on a well-rounded career.

Dr. Bob Thompson, our 2017 Leman Science in Practice Award winner, is the invited speaker and will be sharing his wealth of experience on many aspects of disease control and elimination, transport biosecurity and production medicine.

Guidelines for the DVM Student Session at the Leman Conference

Veterinary student, did you shadow a swine practitioner this summer or were involved in an interesting clinical case investigation? Did you work on your veterinary skills by designing a differential diagnosis list or working on a treatment plan? Did you investigate a problem by analyzing production records? We want to hear about it!

Call for case description:

The Allen D. Leman Swine Conference is organizing a session for veterinary students to demonstrate their problem-solving skills through the presentation of a case or experience where students challenged their clinical training and problem-solving capabilities necessary for day-to-day practice.
The session will take place on Sunday at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, from 1:00−2:45 p.m. at the Saint Paul RiverCentre and will include presentations from 7 veterinary students.

Case description guidelines and instructions:

This session primary goal is for students to identify a question they faced when they spent time in the swine industry. The question can relay to production issues (records analysis, performances) or to a clinical case. Some examples of relevant questions can be:
- How to handle a respiratory case in finishing pigs?
- What caused mortality observed in this farm?
- Why did this farm production results drop between February and April?
- How is the US swine industry different from the Brazilian one?
The case description must include the thought process and the steps followed by the student to solve/answer the question.
This session will reward students’ creativity: the use of new support material (video files, interviews) is encouraged and will be rewarded. Explain in the case description how you may incorporate this aspect in your presentation.

Submission process:

Submit your one-page case description (one column, font size 11) to Dr. Perle Boyer, pboyer@umn.edu by Tuesday, August 15 at midnight and you will be notified by Friday, September 1 whether your presentation has been selected. An optional file can be sent as an appendix to demonstrate creativity.

Awards:

Students invited to present will receive a $1,000 stipend, free admission to the Leman Swine Conference, and a copy of the Diseases of Swine book (10th edition).

Creativity and originality in the support and delivery are encouraged. The session will take place on Sunday at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference and will include presentations from 7 veterinary students. Students invited to present will receive a $1,000 stipend, free admission to the Leman Swine Conference, and a copy of the Diseases of Swine book (10th edition).

Submit your one page case/problem description (tests results and figures can be added in an appendix) to Dr. Perle Boyer, pboyer(at)umn.edu by August 15th at midnight and you will be notified by September 1st whether your presentation has been selected.

Both clinical cases or a production problems will be accepted for review.

Gary Louis, PhD confirmed as keynote speaker at the 2017 Allen D. Leman swine conference

The Allen D. Leman swine conference is only six months away! Our team is preparing an exciting conference program for you this year and we will update you regularly on the speakers and topics that will be covered during this great event bringing science-driven solutions to the complex challenges facing the swine industry. We already shared with you that the recipient of this year’s Science in Practice award is Dr. Bob Thompson.

We are glad to announce that our first key note speaker for the conference will be Gary Louis, Executive Vice President of Seaboard Foods LLC where he is in charge of the live operations. We are delighted that he has accepted our invitation to share his tremendous experience and his vision of the swine production.

Dr. Bob Thompson Named the 2017 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award Recipient

This year the Science in Practice award, given by the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will be presented to Dr. Bob Thompson, DVM with PIC (Pig Improvement Company).

“Boehringer Ingelheim is pleased to join the University of Minnesota in congratulating Dr. Thompson, an outstanding swine practitioner whose work ensures pig health is a priority from start to finish,” says Lara Sheeley, director of marketing for the BI swine division. “BI is committed to supporting swine industry leaders in their pursuit of knowledge and science to drive innovative solutions.”

The Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award is given each year at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference to a swine practitioner who has shown an exceptional ability to utilize science in day to day practice. The swine practitioner who receives the award bears the primary responsibility to move research into the field. Nominations and selection of the winner are governed by the Swine Faculty Planning Committee at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota.

“For more than 20 years this award has honored some of the most accomplished veterinary leaders in the swine industry,” says Bob Morrison, DVM, MBA, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the University of Minnesota. “We are excited to partner with Boehringer Ingelheim this year in honoring Dr. Thompson.”
