How CVM researchers are tackling a devastating swine virus

For decades, veterinarians and producers have struggled to contain porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV).

The highly pathogenic swine virus mutates rapidly, making control a moving target. Pigs infected with PRRSV suffer from high morbidity and mortality rates. Even those who live endure difficulty breathing, fever, and loss of appetite. Today, the disease affects as many as half of all swine breeding farms in the United States. It’s the most costly issue the swine industry faces.

Biosecurity for all: Creating biosecurity plans for swine exhibitors based on secure pork supply templates

Researchers from the Ohio State University, Marissa Hall, Andreia G. Arruda, Magnus R. Campler, and Jacqueline M. Nolting, share the findings of their study which examined extending the secure pork supply (SPS) framework to swine exhibitors.

December 2025 Swine Disease Global Surveillance Report: Details on ASF in Spain, HFM, and more

The new Swine Disease Global Surveillance Report was released earlier this week. Coordinated by the University of Minnesota in collaboration with the Swine Health Information Center, the aim of these reports is to have a structure for near real-time identification of hazards. In this report, updates are focusing on African Swine Fever, Foot-and-Mouth Disease and the Canadian suspension of U.S. imports of horses, swine, and ruminates.
