A Review of MSHMP PED Chart 3: PED Outbreak History

This is our Friday rubric: every week a new Science Page from the Bob Morrison’s Swine Health Monitoring Project. The previous editions of the science page are available on our website.

During the 2016-17 MSHMP year, we introduced a graph, PED Chart 3, in response to the recurring question of if farms that break with PED had repeating histories of infection. The horizontal axis is shown at the top and indicates the number of farms that have broken in the current MSHMP season. New farms are added throughout the year as they break. On the vertical axis we list each of these farms’ PED historical number of breaks in past seasons. Outbreaks are colored in blue, a darker tone indicates that a farm has had more than one outbreak within the year, and grey indicates a lack of historical data (Figure 1).

Risk assessment of the presence of PED and ASF viruses in spray-dried porcine plasma

Today we are sharing a new publication from a collaboration with our colleagues at the School of Public Health and the College of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota. In this study, Drs. Sampedro, Urriola, Van de Ligt, Schroeder, and Shurson estimated the maximal viral load of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea and African Swine Fever that could be found in spray-dried porcine plasma to still achieve a virus-free batch (no infectious viral particle) for three different batch sizes (10, 15, and 20 tons). They also quantified the impact of different treatments such as spray-drying, UV and extended storage in decreasing viral loads to meet the thresholds.

PEDV: Sow herds are eliminating the virus faster

By Xiaomei Yue, Mariana Kikuti, Claudio Marcello Melini and Cesar A Corzo, University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, Morrison Swine Health Monitoring Project

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus was first detected in the United States during the spring of 2013. The initial epidemic spanned approximately 1.5 years, with the prevalence transitioning to endemic levels by the end of 2014 (Figure 1).

Associations between weather events and PED

This is our Friday rubric: every week a new Science Page from the Bob Morrison’s Swine Health Monitoring Project. The previous editions of the science page are available on our website.

In today’s Science Page the MSHMP team explores the connection between weather events and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus outbreaks.
