Best of Leman 2022: Evan Koep – Raising pigs in Prop 12 compliant farms – what is working (or not) for us

This is our most popular series on the blog. Once a month, we are sharing with you a presentation given at the Allen D. Leman swine conference, on topics that the swine group found interesting, innovative or that lead to great discussions.

You can find all of the presentations selected from previous conferences on the blog here.

This presentation was originally given by Dr. Evan Koep of Pipestone Veterinary Services during the 2022 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, recorded September 19, 2022.

Understanding PRRSv diversity at the pig and litter level

This is our Friday rubric: every week a new Science Page from the Bob Morrison’s Swine Health Monitoring Project. The previous editions of the science page are available on our website.

This week, Dr. Mariana Kikuti from the MSHMP team is sharing results from a study using whole genome sequencing to assess PRRSv diversity within and across litters.

Key points

  • Viral diversity within the piglet population is generally small, but higher diversity was found in ORFs 4 and 5a.
  • Within animal consensus changes were observed in a period as short as 2 weeks, which means piglets might be going to the GF sites with different viruses than the ones identified closer to farrowing.

Use of Whole Genome Sequencing during a PRRSv outbreak investigation

We hope our US readers had a great Thanksgiving surrounded by loved ones. We are grateful that all of you keep reading us week after week and we hope we can continue providing you with valuable content for a long time!

This week, Drs. Sunil Mor and Albert Rovira from the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory explain how we can use whole genome sequencing during a PRRS outbreak investigation.

Key Points

  • Viral recombination is documented in PRRSv
  • Whole Genome Sequencing can provide the detailed information to better understand recombination and PRRSv dynamics
