Dr. Montse Torremorell receives first ever Outstanding Swine Academic of the Year award

Given annually to an AASV member employed in academia who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service to the swine veterinary profession. Faculty members, graduate students, and researchers are eligible to receive this award.

Dr Montserrat Torremorell was named the 2022 recipient of the Outstanding Swine Academic of the Year award. Newly established and presented for the first time this year, the award is given to an AASV member employed in academia who has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service to the swine veterinary profession. Faculty members, graduate students, and researchers are eligible to receive this award.

The Morrison Swine Health Monitoring Project take a look at whether PRRSv cases associated with the linage 1C, RFLP 1-4-4 variant can be detected in the outside areas of farms undergoing an outbreak.

There is little understanding of contributing factors aiding the 1-4-4 L1C PRRSv rapid transmission and biosecurity breaches
Environmental detection in recently infected farms was possible although detection was low
Most positive samples originated from exhausting fans, showing the virus may exit a positive barn via that route

USDA awards University of Minnesota over $1.5 million to research Foreign Animal Disease

Two projects: one lead by Andres Perez, DVM, PhD and Jerry Torrison, DVM, PhD, DACVPM focuses on surveillance and detection of foreign animal disease, one lead by Sunil Mor, BVSc & AH, MVSc, PhD, aims to develop rapid field test for foot-and-mouth disease.
